1. Introduction
Have you ever been in the situation that you have asked yourself
on which disk you have seen a certain pretty mouse pointer or on
which disk you saw these cool workbench colors ?
If so, then you maybe have inserted the disk which was supposed
to be the right one and you have rebooted your machine.
Then you maybe have seen that it was not the right disk and you
have inserted another one and again you have pressed CTRL+AMIGA
+AMIGA, and so on...
Especially if you have a hard disk with a giant startup sequence
(like mine) you are certainly not fascinated to reboot your
machine so often.
How does "ShowPrefs" help in such situations ?
"ShowPrefs" allows you to view the preferences of each disk you
want (which is of course senseful only for disk with stored
preferences on it) without rebooting your Amiga.
How does "ShowPrefs" work ?
If you create your individual preferences for a boot disk, the
workbench utility "Preferences" stores your configuration into
a file called "system-configuration".
When your boot from this disk, the system will look for this file
in the root directory and the "devs" directory. If it can be
found, the contents are set as the configuration. If there was no
file, the ugly default preferences will appear (60 columns etc.).
When you start "ShowPrefs" (in a way as showed below) it will try
to open the specified configuration file (like the system does).
If "ShowPrefs" is successful, it will set the contents of the file
as the current preferences and open a tiny window in the middle
of the screen.
You can now watch to the new preferences or continue your work
with the new configuration.
If you want to get back the old preferences, you only have to
close "ShowPref"'s window. The configuration is then the same as
before you have started "ShowPrefs".

2. Usage from CLI:
Syntax: ShowPrefs [<name of configuration file> | "?"]
ShowPrefs accepts at most one parameter.
The parameter "?" gives you a short explanation of the syntax.
A parameter different from "?" it treated as the name of a
system-configuration file (be careful ! There is no way to
distinguish between a preferences file and a normal data file.
If you specify the wrong file, the program won't crash but you
will get a strange configuration.).
If you specify no parameter, "ShowPrefs" will try to open the
files "system-configuration" or "devs/system-configuration"
(in this order) on the current device.
***************************************************************
3. Usage from Workbench:
You can start "ShowPrefs" from Workbench by double-clicking the
"ShowPrefs" icon.
If you have specified no tool type, "ShowPrefs" will try to open
the file "system-configuration" or "devs/system-configuration"
(in this order) on the current device.
"ShowPrefs" recognizes the tool type "UNIT" which can be used to
specify the device where the preferences file will be searched.
Example: UNIT=df1:
If you start "ShowPrefs" with this tool type, the program will
try to open the file "df1:system-configuration" or
"df1:devs/system-configuration".
If you are searching for a certain preferences file on several
disks, you can do the search in a fast way. Just set the tool type
value to the drive you want to use and you can examine a disk
simply by putting the disk into the drive and double-clicking the
"ShowPrefs" icon.
